Tennis Tips: Vary Your Tennis Game

Vary your game. For example, don't keep hitting
your backhand across court - go down the line
sometimes.

If you don't vary your game, all you are doing
is increasing the power of anticipation of your
opponent.

Mix your game up with drop shots, slices,
different angles, varied returns, different serves...
and you will have surprise on your side and make
it harder for your opponent to anticipate your
next shot.

Tennis tips: don't beat up on yourself

Don't beat up on yourself if you mishit a tennis shot.

Extract what learning you can from the mishit and
re-focus. Focus on the next shot, keeping in mind
what you have just learned from the last tennis shot.

Great tennis players can stay in-the-moment
through the power of concentration.

Tennis is not about the racquet - it's about your
state of mind.

Tennis tips: the best defensive lob

What can you do when an opponent comes to the net
after hitting the ball deep into the backhand or
forehand court?

One option is to lob the ball to the opposite back corner
so you are using the diagonal of the court. This increases
your margin for error as the diagonal is the longest part
of the court.

Also, your opponent will typically approach the net by
going to the same side to which they have hit their
approach shot. This makes it even harder for them
to retrieve the ball that you have lobbed across the
diagonal to the other side.

Tennis tips: receiving a tennis serve

Take a deep breath before returning a serve
and then let out the breath as you hit the ball.

This requires some timing on your part but it
will increase your anticipation, improve your
timing and increase the power of your return.

The deep breath helps to anchor you and still
the nerves as well. You will be surprised at how
much power you can generate through this
breathing process.
